Golf Cart Rules in the Coachella Valley

California Vehicle Code Section 21115 allows golf carts on roads with posted speed limits of 25 mph or below. In the Coachella Valley, this covers a significant network of residential streets, connector roads, and community paths. Each city has slightly different ordinances — Palm Desert, Indian Wells, and Rancho Mirage are the most cart-integrated, while Cathedral City and Palm Springs have more limited zones.

Cart Requirements

Headlights, taillights, turn signals, mirrors, windshield, horn, and parking brake. Valid driver's license required. No separate registration needed for standard golf carts (under 25 mph max speed).

NEVs vs. Golf Carts

Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) can reach 25 mph and travel on roads up to 35 mph. They require DMV registration, insurance, and a VIN. Many residents upgrade to NEVs for broader access.

Best Times to Cart

Early morning and late afternoon are ideal. Many communities see peak cart traffic around 4–6 PM heading to dining. Avoid Highway 111 crossings during rush hour — use dedicated underpasses where available.
